Important notice:
Government officials are seeking final public input regarding the future use of Hart and Miller Island.  The initially promised plans for a large forested recreational area have been abandoned.  the current plan under strong consideration is a 600 to 800 acre mud flat or wetland bird sanctuary.  The hasty manner in which the island was filled with dredged material is believed to be the reason for this action.  If you have a strong opinion concerning this matter or alternative suggestion contact your local state representative and email Dave dbibo dbibo@marylandports.com and Nat Brown nbrown2@marylandports.com.    State Senator Norman Stone is beleived to be the most involved elected official in this project however copy any other government official you feel is appropriate and please copy your comments to Jim.hnca@verizon.net..  You must act quickly with your comments as the closing date for public comments is on or about December 9, 2008.

As a matter of record the Holly Neck Conservation Association, the Back River Neck Peninsula Community Association and the Lower Back River Neck Peninsula planning committee have united in a requested that at least 200 acre portion of the filled containment area be drained and made capable of sustaining an upland forest with low impact human recreational activity.

Thank You,
Jim Mitchell

  • Purple Martin Birdhouse Grant:  We purchased and installed bird houses in four locations around our community to encourage purple martin habitation and naturally decrease the mosquito population.  Our technical resource is The Nature Society at www.naturesociety.org
  • The Bruce E. Johnson Land Trust Fund: The Holly Neck Conservation Association oversees this local land trust which was established in memory of Bruce E Johnson.  Bruce, an area resident, passed away from cancer in February 2002.  In lieu of flowers he requested that his family and friends establish this land trust.  The Holly Neck Conservation Association is a non-profit 501(c)(3) conservation association dedicated to the conservation of nature and the preservation of the land on the Holly Neck Peninsula of the Chesapeake Bay. Donations to the Land Trust Fund are tax deductible.

The mission of the fund was established to identify and protect the significant, sensitive and scenic land on the Holly Neck Peninsula of the Chesapeake Bay which includes but is not limited to the woodlands, wildlife, shoreline, open space and natural beauty of the environment and its surroundings on the Holly Neck Peninsula for present and future generations. Specifically, the fund may be used to foster the mission of land preservation and conservation by and through:

    1. Encouraging and educating landowners as to the various options and benefits of putting land into conservation
    2. Acquiring title of or monitoring conservation easements of land already placed in conservation
    3. Assisting other entities with similar missions and goals of land conservation and efforts in preserving critical areas of the Chesapeake Bay
    4. Education of volunteers on activity related to protecting and preserving land
    5. Monitoring and applying for grants related to land conservation and the environment

The Holly Neck Conservation Association Local Land Trust  has already achieved a number of successes in fostering our mission including:
     * February 2004: successfully obtained a matching grant for Purple Martin Habitats.
